Romano Paso’s Research Centre Projects

Romano Paso’s Integration Project

Romano Paso’s Integration Project was a 15 week course for Roma of all ages and genders. The aim was to hold courses on identity, by having classes in Romani history, culture, musicm dance, food, and language, because we have the strong belief that knowledge of the past best prepares one for the future. Among the courses we had computer courses for Roma of all ages, poetry writing for women, Roma women discussion groups on gender issues, and homework assistance for children. The project had a positive affect and had more than 200 participants.

RomTv

RomTv uses public access television in Stockholm, Sweden to air cultural programs twice a week. The program for the most part is in Roma and covers subjects as politics, religion, music, dance, language, news, and other events that concern the Roma people. The main objective is to provide Roma with a media that is there own. We do this by allowing the audience to suggest programming and even send footage. The project has now been ongoing for four years in Stockholm.

Romer I Centrum

This project involved performance, an introduction to Romani food, music, dance, history, and literature, to an audience in a famed park (Kungsträdgården) in the middle of Stockholm, that is less familiar with the Roma and still are neighbours with them. The event was a complete success and was based on Ethnological and Sociological research from two of our members of the board that planned how to market the concept and manage it based on their findings.

A Language without Borders

This was an international conference in cooperation with the RKC, the Centre for Multi-Ethnic Research (Uppsala University) and Söderthorns University. The event brought together scholars and practitioners who work with the Romani language from as far away as South America, Pakistan and from throughout Europe. The goal was to discuss standardization, raising issues such as to examine what was done and the past and make changes where needed, and make further inclusions of issues such as socio-political and economic, that resulted in a declaration signed by all invited participants inclusive of the fore mentioned questions.

Romani Culture

Romano Paso’s Research Centre is presently contribution to Romani Cultural course at the Centre for Multi-Ethnic Research, Uppsala University.

Romani without borders

This project partially an internet based course in the Romani language. The course is the first of its kind, using the net to provide literature online, with interactive games, email exams, word list and net meetings. The course uses a phonetic system to satisfy more than one dialect’s form of pronunciation and explains how one can cross dialect communicate.

Romano Paso’s Publishing

Romano Paso has its own publishing house and has published a grammar book in Romani, a CD in Romani with children games, and a brochure about the Romani Holocaust. We are in the process of developing a newsletter with articles on a scholarly level as well as a cynical approach.

Summer Games

Romano Paso gathers children during the summer season from different backgrounds involving them in various sports that are inclusive of both genders. We are able to do this by concentrating on specific sports that do not require physical contact, such as Frisbee Football, canoeing, amongst others.

Romano Paso also assists young Roma on their path to higher education by helping them with advice on where to apply and how to.
